In the framework of the WSIS+20 review process, the AlSur consortium sent its contributions which can be reviewed here.
Twenty years after the start of the WSIS process, AlSur highlights key advances such as the creation of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and the incorporation, albeit limited, of the gender perspective in digital technologies. The multi-stakeholder model promoted by WSIS has opened up more inclusive spaces for dialogue, especially in Latin America, although significant challenges remain.
Among the most urgent barriers are identified the reduction of civic space, the lack of funding for social organizations, and the scarce representation of ethnic groups and communities affected by technology. In addition, issues such as the environmental impact and governance of artificial intelligence require greater attention in global debates.
Looking ahead, AlSur proposes to strengthen the articulation between WSIS, the Global Digital Compact, ensuring that the principles of human rights and diverse participation are not weakened by centralized approaches. WSIS+20 should be an opportunity to rethink digital governance in an inclusive, sustainable and people-centered way.
